Why Mental Wellbeing?
"Are you healthy?"
When most people think about health, their mind tends to steer straight towards physical health. Perhaps they think about the last time they exercised, ate, or drank water.
When most people think about health, their mind tends to steer straight towards physical health. Perhaps they think about the last time they exercised, ate, or drank water.
What most people don’t realise is, taking care
of your mental wellbeing is just as important as exercising and staying
hydrated. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological as well as social
well-being. These will be covered throughout the next few weeks.
People also tend to forget that good mental
health is more than just the absence of mental illness. Mental wellbeing, as
described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is “the state in which the
individual realises his or own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of
life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her
community.”
Here is a little introduction of 6 tips for building
good mental health:
1) Build relationships
Having
good relationships with other people is important. This includes friends,
family, workmates and your community.
2) Exercise and stay healthy
Good
physical health is related to better mental health. This includes having a
healthy diet, exercising, and having regular check-ups.
3) Develop gratitude
Being thankful
and grateful, as well as having a positive attitude and keeping track of things
that are good can lead to increased mental wellbeing.
4) Identify and use your strengths
Finding
out what you are good at and utilising those skills will be beneficial as it
allows self-help, and help for others to create meaning and purpose.
5) Create flow
Finding
enjoyable activities you enjoy in the form of work, hobbies, arts or sports
also aids mental wellbeing.
6) Give to others
Making
contributions, volunteering, helping, and performing small acts of kindness for
the community increases wellbeing. This provides positive energy and emotions
that can cancel out negativity feelings.
