Tick Tock: Time Management

Last week we talked about stress and how to manage and relieve stress.

For some students, lack of organisation and time management can lead to stress. Some of us procrastinate and put off assignments and studying. Then, we reach the conclusion that theres not enough time to study, we have five assignments and three tests in the next week, then we have a mental breakdown.

Heres a list to go through next time you're drowning in assignments.
  • Organise your time

At the start of each semester, I like to jot down when all my assignments are due in my calendar. This way, you won't forget the important dates and in turn plan around those. And hopefully, prepare in advance to the due date.

Feel free to add any other recreational activities, or recurring commitments. This allows you to have a clear picture of your upcoming weeks.
  • Assess your time

If you're one of those people who always wonder "Where did my time go?" you might have to start keeping track of everything you do, from the moment you wake up, to the time you fall asleep.

After doing this for a week, add up the totals of your activities to visualise what you're ACTUALLY doing with your time. After you identify whether you're always on Facebook or going out too much, CUT IT OUT OF YOUR SCHEDULE.

In this day and age, there are many useful apps to help you keep track no matter where you are or what you're doing.
  • Keep a to-do list

I find this really useful (even though I never tick anything off) as I can clearly see what is on my plate and empty what's stressing me out on paper.
  • Prioritise

What is more important?? Do that first.

It's easy to accept shifts from work, go for a 'five minute' maccas run which ends up being three hours. So it's important to learn to say no in order to prioritise certain tasks.
  • Create a schedule

Whether it be daily, monthly, creating a schedule allows you to clearly see when you are occupied by commitments and when you have free time. This way you can block off and RESERVE time to study.
  • Give yourself some breaks

Be realistic about scheduling, make sure you give yourself some downtime and enough sleep.
This is my calendar at the moment after following those tips.

My week:

One of my days at uni:

I realise following these tips might not automatically mean you'll finish your next assignment one week before it's due, but going through the motions of organising and planning will give you a sense of control, being able to visualise your tasks and schedule.

Don't pull all-nighters friends! See you next week.
